During Thanksgiving, it is tradition to go around the table and say something we’re thankful for. Common responses include family, friends, a job, a school, a degree, passing exams, and a time to relax with the people you love.
All great responses, but did you notice that they all have something in common? Something positive perhaps?
It’s great to be thankful for the good things, but what about the bad? Whenever we go through hard times or trials, do we thank God for them? Do we recognize the fact that He is still in control and that everything works together for the common good?
“In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Who we are today is a result of events in our lives. I’m sure you’ll agree that even though trials seemed tough at the time, they make us stronger now that we’ve gone through them and succeeded. And the same goes with all trials, even those you are experiencing right now. Remember that there is no great loss without some small gain.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything… Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
– James 1:2-4, 12
Trials are made to strengthen us and test our faith. Will we respond with the joy and thankfulness the way the Lord wants us to? God is in control, and as long as we properly respond to our trials, we will reap the maximum benefits He wants us to receive.
And that alone will truly be something to be thankful for. =)
I completely agree :). This is a great post for anyone going through a tough time. Thanks for posting this it’s a good reminder to be thankful no matter what!
=)
i think its weird that there are so many thankfulness posts only around your thanksgiving =P
Well, it IS Thanksgiving! x)
Yeah, it’s certainly a tough lesson to learn. But ever since I began to find joy in trials, I’ve become more optimistic about them and actually see potential benefits. And you know what? I grow even more in my character and faith than I would have without being open to the trials.
How amazing God’s sovereign plan is! =D
Haha, wow, our posts were a lot alike today! The Spirit’s moving!
He certainly is! =D I was so shocked (in a good way) when I stumbled upon your post. =P
I can totally relate with that right now in my own life. This year has brought a lot of trials and storms my way…but I gotta really thank God for the highs and the lows. Because of those lows, I can really appreciate those highs a lot more! Enjoy this holiday season man and keep those posts coming
Thank you for sharing! It’s always encouraging to hear what God has done in other people’s lives. =)
